At one point, a corporal who throws the prisoners into the sewer trenches tells one of them, a dissident: “You were part of the victors and ended up with the vanquished. Mauricio’s family, confronted with details of his shameful past, initially refuse to acknowledge the truth - that is, accept that they have been blind to the atrocities the loving husband and father committed in the past.Īnd then there is the crucial question of how much responsibility those who served in Castro’s prisons had for carrying out the orders they received. The story of the plantados and their persecutors also carries long-lasting moral implications for the latter. Vilaplana’s movie presents the spectator with the wrenching gamut of moral dilemmas and psychological drama derived from the plantados’ story.Īt one point, the wife of one of the prisoners tells her husband that she and her family are living like pariahs for being associated with counterrevolutionaries, not to speak of the sexual humiliations suffered when entering the prison on visit days. The plantados were known to favor justice over vengeance, but it is one thing to be principled in the abstract and another to have to confront the dilemma in flesh and blood. In Miami, Ramón and his family, among them the son of Jorge (nicknamed “the poet” by other inmates), who died in Mauricio’s prison, confront the impossible dilemma: whether to kill Mauricio and avenge their suffering or try to bring him to justice, which probably would yield no result in U.S. The punishments included being thrown in sewer trenches, having to stand naked for days in tiny cells shared by four prisoners, where only one could lie down to sleep, suffering routine beatings, watching the humiliation to which their loved ones were subjected when visiting them, and other degrading experiences. Ramon’s discovery takes us back, through his painful memory, to Castro’s prisons, where he suffered the worst tortures and witnessed executions and unspeakable acts of violence against other political prisoners. Released recently at the Miami Film Festival, it follows the story of Ramón, a former plantado who escaped and discovers years later that his torturer, lieutenant Mauricio López, is living with impunity with his family in Miami. That’s why Plantados, a new film directed by Lilo Vilaplana, is important. Many in the West, including the self-proclaimed champions of civil rights, were oblivious to the plight of Castro’s political prisoners - often deliberately so. “Cooperate” meant accepting the re-education and indoctrination program introduced in the early 1960s by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, then in charge of “La Cabaña,” an 18th-century fortress turned into a prison and execution camp.įor most of the plantados who spent decades in Castro’s cells, there was no redemption, except among some in Cuba’s South Florida exile community. Instead, he would have been a “plantado,” one of the political prisoners (the “immovable ones”) who refused to cooperate with the regime in exchange for shorter sentences and lesser punishments. I f Nelson Mandela had been Cuban rather than South African, he never would have been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize or become a 20th-century human-rights icon and statesman.

Factors That Could Determine the Outcome of the Fight So they can have more tricks up their sleeve to gain an edge. They are also known for their resourcefulness, memory, and problem-solving ability. IntelligenceĪs opportunistic hunters, raccoons are more intelligent than cats, being able to adapt to various environments. Small battles with dogs or other cats might happen, but they still lack experience when facing wild mammals. Surviving after each fight will help them acquire essential skills and tricks.Ĭats, on the other hand, are mostly raised indoors. Living in their natural habitats, raccoons might find themselves in unexpected fights to the death with other wildlife animals. Their strong straws and sharp teeth also aid them in their hunt. They have strong front paws, allowing them to climb trees and dig through the soil for food. Meanwhile, raccoons are opportunistic hunters who will hunt or scavenge any food sources. They are considered “stealthy hunters”, using a combination of stalking, pouncing, and quick reflexes to catch their prey. When it comes to hunting, cats and raccoons have two different styles.Ĭats are known for their exceptional hunting skills, aided by their sharp teeth and claws, along with their excellent senses. For example, the former can see up to 20 feet away, whereas the latter has limited vision, especially at night. That said, cats have an edge over raccoons in terms of sight, hearing, and smell. Therefore, these scavengers rarely perceive cats as threats and only become aggressive if challenged. Although some felines can reach 25 pounds, most only average around 8–10 pounds and rarely exceeds 28 inches.įrom the difference in size, one can come to the conclusion that while cats are skilled hunters and have a strong predatory instinct, they may lose to a much larger raccoon. With up to 36 pounds in weight, 38 inches in length, and 12 inches in height, raccoons are usually bigger than the average household and feral cats. Will a raccoon kill a cat? Although it’s unlikely, raccoons can kill a feline, especially if they’re desperate for food and the cat is still small. As scavengers, these animals wander around to look for fruits in the backyard or rummage through your trash bins for some leftover food. Raccoons are nocturnal animals that live in wooded areas and big cities alike across America and Europe. Therefore, it’s rare to see cats and raccoons get along. This compels them to become aggressive if sensing their territory is being threatened. However, they still retain their predatory instincts, so they would stalk, chase, and pounce on smaller animals they deem as “prey.”īoth wild and domesticated cats have a strong sense of territoriality. Having built an identity away from the London music scene in the otherworldly and isolated suburbs of Hampshire, Drug Store Romeos are emerging from their cocoon with a purpose, a direction and a fresh lease of life.Larry Finlay, the managing director of Transworld Penguin Random House, said: “We always knew this book would fly but it is exceeding even our most bullish expectations. Those 3am walks home from Fleet station, with amps and flight cases slung over their shoulders, would become a rite of passage the quiet countryside influencing their hushed atmospheric sound and nocturnal leanings, the tight bonds formed back home buoying their hypnotic and delicate blend of dream pop and synth-led explorations. While the band have since moved to London, by the time they came to record The world within our bedrooms, all three members were keen to hold onto that wide-eyed energy for as long as possible. Sharing affections for Suburban Lawns and Tom Tom Club, Drug Store Romeos cut their teeth playing live at college, Guildford Boiler Room and Aldershot West End Centre, rather than the familiarly trodden paths in London – although they did frequent the city as often as three times a week at one point carrying all of their equipment back to Fleet by train as none of the band were old enough to drive. “When I look at that painting it’s where I want my voice to exist,” she says of the work by an artist renowned for her abstract approach to depicting stillness, “I would sing and try to immerse myself in that.”ĭrug Store Romeos formed at college in nearby Farnborough when childhood friends Jonny and Charlie pinned an ad about finding a bassist for their new band to the school’s notice board – Sarah replied and quickly proved herself a better vocalist than either of them. Vocalist Sarah scoured vintage magazines for lyrical inspiration – inspired by Dadaist poet Hugo Ball – and hung a print of transcendentalist artist Agnes Pelton’s 1934 piece ‘Orbits’ in the vocal booth. With their beloved Stereolab, Broadcast, and Mild High Club acting as guiding lights, the band sought to shake things up and push beyond the walls of their bedroom. We always wanted to create our own world, and as a three we have this force field around us.” A lot of bands have a consistent emotion across their whole album but we wanted to reflect the ever changing nature of someone’s mental state over a period of time. The band explain: “The album is a journey of emotions and colour schemes. Recorded at London’s Eastcote Studios with regular producer George Murphy, The world within our bedrooms is a testament to youth and adventure an escape from mundanity and proof that art will always open a door for those looking to escape. ‘What’s On Your Mind’ is also about perspective change and was made for listening to at 10pm as you’re settling in for the night.” During this journey you go through positive and negative emotions, but the negative emotions are not inherently bad and can lead to positive change. Speaking about the new single, with its accompanying video by Qianhui Yu, the band commented: “The last half of the song is sort of our interpretation of a mental journey through realisations about past situations that send you down rabbit holes of thought that end up linking to other rabbit holes. Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only affecting industries like business and healthcare. Both the Antares and Cygnus were built by Orbital Sciences Corporation, a Virginia-based aerospace company. The Antares will carry an unmanned Cygnus spacecraft loaded with 3,293 pounds (1,493 kilograms) of supplies to the International Space Station. Weather permitting, the Antares or its contrail will be visible in Washington, DC, after 90 seconds in Philadelphia after 120 seconds in New York City after 150 seconds and in Boston after 210 seconds. At that time, a thirteen-story Antares rocket is scheduled to lift off from launch pad 0A. Residents from South Carolina to Massachusetts should have an opportunity to see one of these larger rockets if they look toward the island starting at 12:52 p.m. While most involved modestly-sized meteorological and sounding rockets, the completion of launch pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) in 2011 has made it possible to launch larger and more powerful rockets. Since then, more than 14,000 rockets have lifted off. On July 4, 1945, NASA’s predecessor-the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA)-launched the first rocket from Wallops, making the island one of the oldest launch sites in the world. Today, the island is the site of a thriving spaceport that launches several commercial and government rockets each year. This time around, the brand new Falcon 9 Block 5 booster’s life won’t necessarily be cut short after a single launch, so long as the rocket is able to safely land on drone ship Just Read The Instructions (JRTI).More than seventy year ago, wild ponies roamed the marshes and beaches of Wallops Island, a barrier island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The GPS III launch will be SpaceX’s second, following the successful (but expendable) launch of GPS III SV01 and Falcon 9 booster B1054 in December 2018. Critically, the mission will be the company’s first operational launch and landing for the US Air/Space Force after the military branch gave SpaceX permission to attempt to land booster B1060. Regardless, GPS III SV03 is now SpaceX’s next launch. If the US military did, in fact, intervene to request that the GPS III SV03 and Starlink-9 launch order be swapped, it might technically benefit from having SpaceX’s more or less full attention, but it would also lose out on the invaluable data provided by another launch. While entirely speculative, it’s not implausible. Still, SpaceX’s Starlink missions pose a perfect storm of low cost and high launch frequency requirements that could incentivize corner-cutting in the short term.ĭouble Falcon 9s with Starlink V1 L-9 in the foreground at LC39A and GPS III SV03 in the background at SLC-40 I was able to take this photo! /qxf4hj6cUd- MadeOnEarthFoundInSpace JBehind B1051 and Starlink-9 at Pad 39A, Falcon 9 booster B1060 (engine section pictured above) was vertical at LC-40 after completing a successful pre-launch static fire. Given that any Falcon 9 failure would severely impact all SpaceX launches, including internal Starlink missions and commercial launches for customers, that should come as no surprise. However, as one door closes, another has opened, leaving four more SpaceX launches now scheduled in July.Īdditionally, SpaceX’s willingness to delay an internal Starlink launch by a substantial amount serves as a confirmation that the company continues to prioritize reliability and established procedures over expedience. Scheduled to launch no earlier than (NET) 3:56 pm EDT (19:56 UTC) on June 30th, the GPS III SV03 mission will be SpaceX’s last this month, cutting short the possibility that June 2020 would be the company’s first four-launch month. SpaceX has stood down from a June 26th Starlink launch attempt to allow “additional time for pre-launch checkouts,” meaning that the company’s second US military GPS satellite mission is now up next. Henry is the husband that has been bring his new wife home for the household, he has been planning this for years, with his clones being used to complete his perfect world, the deeper the story goes, the more we learn about his decisions. Left alone in the house, Elizabeth starts exploring more which does take her into the forbidden room, which only angers Henry to new levels, where he must start his plans again.Ĭharacters – Elizabeth is the new wife ready for her life of luxury, she is delighted with the number of clothes she has, the size of the house, but she isn’t prepared for what she finds in the forbidden room, a clone of herself, she spends the film learning who she is and why she is being cloned. Story: Elizabeth Harvest starts when newlyweds Elizabeth (Lee) and Henry (Hinds) return to his mansion to start their lives together, he has workers in his home with Claire (Gugino) and Oliver (Beard) doing the household jobs, while Elizabeth is banned from one room. There may be spoilers in the rest of the review When the husband returns she pays the price. First chance she enters and discovers what might be human cloning. The attitude of the characters seems to be: this plan is diabolical, but Henry’s mind is brilliant, so I have to go along with it, plus this is the way he is handling his grief. There is much discussion at the moment on separating the art from the artist, but what about separating the science from the scientist? His inner circle seem to have made the separation successfully. Therefore he can use or dispose of them at will. Elizabeth Harvest contains a similar problem: Henry has created clones, which are his property. As we know, evil geniuses all make use of the same architecture firm.Īmong other things, Ex Machina touched on the ethics of Artificial Intelligence – consciousness, the rights of intelligent beings. This includes the secluded location, appearance of the building, underground laboratory, and the heavy-handed security measures. In terms of style, Elizabeth Harvest is very Ex Machina (2014). Similarly, with the question of time travel in Looper (2012), Old Joe ( Bruce Willis) sidesteps the problem: “I don’t want to talk about time travel shit, ’cause if we start talking about it then we’re gonna be here all day” In other words, it’s best not to think too hard about the mechanics of it, especially if, as Elizabeth Harvest demonstrates, it dissolves into exposition in much the same way as a L’Oreal advert (Here comes the science). But how successful is it to explore the details in this type of sci-fi? It doesn’t necessarily make the premise more plausible, and can disrupt the rhythm of the story as a whole. However (remember Dolly the sheep?) cloning comes with problems, to which Gutierrez devotes a third of the film. She is a clone of his deceased wife, and he has his reasons. Henry, with his “brilliant mind”, has created Elizabeth in his underground lab. Elizabeth goes about exploring her new home like a sexy cat. Of course, women have two natural states: the sensual rubbing-all-objects-within-reach one, and the running away from attackers one. Mercifully the sex scenes between the couple are minimal, though Elizabeth is partially clothed or entirely naked for much of the time. Elizabeth, played by Abbey Lee, and looking much younger than her 31 years is within minutes identified as the new bride of Henry (66 year old Hinds). Each one of them deeply creepy in their own way.Įlizabeth Harvest is a solid example of the male gaze in film. Elizabeth Harvest is a sci-fi thriller set in the remote home of tortured genius and budding Dr Frankenstein, Henry.ĭirector Sebastian Gutierrez makes the most of a small cast, comprising Ciarán Hinds, Abbey Lee, Matthew Beard (Oliver), Dylan Baker (local cop Logan), as well as his partner and long time collaborator Carla Gugino as Henry’s assistant/maid Claire. I’ve tried out Remo Recover for Windows, Mac, and Android for a couple of days to share what I learned from the program and if it works as it is advertised. The great thing is that I was able to try out a number of data recovery tools and have ample knowledge of what I want from them. I’ve corrupted hard drives and lost tons of files. There are times when my curiosity gets the best of me and I end up making things worse than before I started. My curiosity for hardware and software brings me to the very core of the products. I’m the type of guy who likes to tinker with technology. Difficult to locate specific files amongst thousands of deleted files found after scan. What I Don’t Like: Very long scanning times. You can save recovery sessions to load on another date. Was able to retrieve a lot of deleted files to a usable state. Varying software versions depending on your recovery needs. What I Like: Lots of easy-to-follow instructions from start to finish. Also, we recommend you skip the Basic version and go for Media or Pro version directly. Thus we believe the program is better at retrieving data from a smaller-volume drive. However, we found that Remo Recover did a fantastic job of recovering files from an SD card. This made it almost impossible to find the specific files I was looking for. Most of the files lost their file names and were renamed by file number. The Pro version took a long time to scan a 1TB hard drive and found over 200,000 files. The Media version was able to find around 30 GBs of photos with about 85% of the files deleted still usable. The Media and Pro versions did a much better job. Sadly, it wasn’t able to find the specific files I deleted for the test. The Basic version simply does a quick scan of the storage device and tries to recover files. Gordon took credit for writing the piano ending for the track. Duane Allman played a crying bird sound at the end of the track. The Dominos also paid tribute to jazz legend Charlie Parker, known as Bird. The main guitar riff emulates one written by blues guitarist Albert King for his song As The Years Go Passing By. She recalls that she “wasn’t so happy when Eric wrote ‘Layla’ while was still married to George.” She eventually married Clapton in 1979, though they divorced nine years later. During this time, Clapton fell in love with Harrison’s wife, Pattie. Similarly, Eric Clapton collaborated on songs with George Harrison of the Beatles in the early 1960s. The story follows a poet that falls madly in love with Layla, who married another. The song was inspired both by a story of Arab origin and a real-life experience. The Unplugged version of Layla didn’t come out until much later. The new band played on Clapton’s solo album and eventually put out their own album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.Ĭlapton and Gordon wrote the titular song together in 1970. With bassist Carl Radle and keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, they formed a new group called Derek and the Dominos. He joined Delaney & Bonnie’s backup band in 1969.Ĭlapton and Gordon scooped up the rest of the backing band’s rhythm section. Gordon often played evening shows in Las Vegas and flew to Los Angeles to record during the day. He toured with the Everly Brothers and played on albums such as The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. Instead of attending UCLA on a music scholarship, Gordon began his professional career in the early 1960s. While on tour, he met drummer, Jim Gordon. When the band broke up in 1968, he began touring with the rhythm section of Delaney & Bonnie’s backup band. Hailing from England and widely considered one of the best rock guitarists ever, Eric Clapton began performing in the United States with his band Cream in the 1960s. We’re taking a closer look at the song’s origins and its diverse recordings. These two renderings of the song couldn’t be more different. From his presence in seminal blues-rockers the Yardbirds to the power trio of Cream and his own solo career, Clapton's work has relied heavily on his electric guitar skills.Derek and the Dominoes originally released Layla in 1970, and Eric Clapton recorded his MTV Unplugged version in 1992. The acoustic surroundings were a fruitful but unexpected turn for Clapton. The show first aired on March 11th, 1992, in the U.S.Ĭlapton's performance on Unplugged nabbed him an armload of trophies at the 1993 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, Best Male Vocal Performance, and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Clapton eventually married Boyd in 1979, but they later divorced.Ĭlapton's Unplugged special was taped January 16th, 1992. Clapton fell in love with Patti Boyd, who was at the time married to his friend George Harrison. The history of the song, which has now passed into legend, is rooted in a love triangle. By deconstructing the tune's original electric guitar lines, Clapton performed “Layla” with only the spine of the song intact, a drastic revision. Ironically, the searing blues on the record, and on “Layla” in particular, only increased his reputation.Ĭlapton re-recorded “Layla” for an MTV Unplugged special. Seeking to downplay his guitar-god status, Eric Clapton refused to have his name included in the group name or album title. “Layla” was originally released on the Derek & the Dominos album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs in November 1970.
